Things you should know about IUI

It is not always following our plan when it comes to trying to have a baby. Nowadays, a lot of couples are planning to have a baby but after years and years of trying, conception still does not happen. According to medical reports, one In eight couples is struggling to conceive. Today, as modern medical technology advances, there are different kinds of fertility treatments to help the struggling couple. In fact, a lot of couples have considered the intrauterine insemination (IUI) as it’s cheaper and less invasive than in vitro fertilization (IVF). So if you also are struggling and considering this treatment, here are things you should know about the IUI.

What is IUI?

This is an artificial insemination method that injects sperm directly into the uterus close to the fallopian tubes, where fertilization takes place. As a result, the sperm will be at the right place and at the right time which will help the chances of successful conception to increase. By skipping the trip through the vagina and the cervix, the sperm do not have to swim as much as usual, allowing them to reach their target egg on time.

Who are the candidates

Intrauterine insemination is often for a couple who are struggling with unexplained infertility or the inability to conceive after long periods of trying. In some cases, couples with male fertility problems are also good candidates. The male partner’s sperm may not enough or deformed. Sometimes, IUI will be used when the cervical environment or cervical mucus is hostile to sperm, making it hard for them to swim. Same-sex couples or single women may also turn to this kind of insemination for help to start.

IUI is not recommended for women who have fallopian tube blockages or conditions, a history of pelvic infections, or significant endometriosis. Women over 40 years old are also should not attempt this kind of insemination.

The Success Rate Of IUI

There are plenty of factors that will affect the success rate of Intrauterine insemination. Maternal age is one of the most important factors. The younger the mother, the higher the success rate when IUI is applied. Another important factor is the quality of sperm, eggs, and the presence of fallopian tube damage. Taking fertility medications before an IUI procedure can increase the success rate of conception.  Expert’s estimates on IUI success rate on are:

  • 8-10% success rate per cycle with IUI for male-factor infertility
  • 5% success rate per cycle with IUI for tubal infertility
  • 18-20% success rate per cycle with IUI for unexplained infertility

The chances may seem low but they will increase with each additional IUI cycle.

The price of IUI

The average cost of this treatment is  300$ – 1000$. While the actual insemination may only cost a few hundred dollars, the infertility treatments, drugs, and other services can add a couple of thousand dollars to the total price. Although it may not be cheap, it is still a whole lot less than what more invasive fertility treatments typically cost. A good number of insurance companies cover IUI. There may be some variables depending on your insurance company and coverage type. Some insurance policies may include limits on how many IUI cycles are covered or may cover IUI only if certain fertility drugs are used. If you are considering doing this procedure, you should make a call to your insurance companies for detailed information.
