What should you eat right after having C-section

Within the first 6-8 hours after birth, you will normally not allowed to eat anything as there is still a quite amount of gas that trapped inside your body. This condition happened due to your intestines and stomach are affected during the section, making bowel movements decrease. Thereby, the gas produced in your body can not exist. If you are too hungry, you can eat a small amount of vegetarian soup or fruit juice. After your intestines and stomach work again you can start eating other normal foods.

However, you should improve the number of foods that are high in protein, vitamin C, and iron in your diet. These nutrients are very important to help you restore your health after the C section.

Protein

Protein is the key to the healing process and is needed for the growth of new tissue. It is also the main source of energy for your body to work and heal. Foods rich in protein are meats, fish, chicken, eggs, dairy foods, nuts, dried beans, and peas.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C plays an important role in healing and fighting infection. Green vegetables and ripe fruits contain a lot of vitamin C that can boost your immune system to prevent different kinds of illnesses. In addition, you may face constipation as your bowel movements may not fully functional yet. Therefore vitamin C and fiber in greens vegetable or fruits will help you prevent constipation and even hemorrhoids. Foods that normally high in vitamin C are oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, melons, and papayas.

Iron

Iron helps the immune system and is needed for hemoglobin. In addition, iron also essential to stimulate blood production and wounds healing. Obviously, you will lose a big amount of blood during the surgery. So, supply more iron will help you feel less pain and heal faster. Red meats, liver, dried beans, dried fruits, and iron-enriched cereals are good sources for iron. 

Prenatal vitamin and supplements after C section

As your digest system may still weak after the C section, you may have to absorb the nutrients by other supplements. Your doctor may want you to keep taking your prenatal vitamins and iron pills for the first 6 weeks after the C section. Remember to take 1 iron pill a day as taking more may upset your stomach.  It takes about 6 months for your body to restore its supply of iron. Therefore combining foods and supplements will help your body get the amount of iron it needs to heal. If you are bottle-feeding your newborn, you can take an over-the-counter vitamin with iron for 6 months. If you are breastfeeding, it is normally recommended that you take prenatal vitamins for as long as you breast-feed.

Drink plenty of Fluids after C Section

It is important to drink plenty of fluids after you give birth in general and especially after a C section. Drinking enough fluids every day will help you stay hydrated and prevent constipation. Drink 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of fluids each day. It does not have to be water. You can drink low-fat milk, non-sweetened fruit juices, or eat low-fat yogurt. It is recommended that you add 200 – 500 extra calories to your diet as well. Extra calories and fluids are needed for making high-quality milk. You can add the extra calories by drinking extra fruit juices and low-fat milk. Also, you should try to include foods rich in Vitamin A such as greens, cantaloupes, carrots, and sweet potatoes.
