How to Dress Your Newborn Baby in Winter

As the American Academy of Pediatrics explains, young children are unable to regulate their body temperature as well as an adult and they’re more susceptible to extremes in hot or cold weather. So in case you are welcoming your little angel this winter, it’s crucial to keep them toasty and cozy in cold weather. Don’t worry, we are here to help. Here we have some of the best tips to dress your newborn in winter

Dress Your Baby In Layers

As newborns’ systems are still incomplete, they will have trouble regulating their body temperature. Plus, it can be difficult to tell if your baby is hot or cold, but the most common way is to check the back of your baby’s neck. You should follow the AAP’s rule of thumbs by dressing your baby in one more layer of clothing than you would wear in the same weather.

Start simple with a onesie then add layers when it’s getting colder outside.  However, do not put too many layers on your baby. Excess layers will cause your baby to sweat and wet their clothes, thereby bringing their temperature down.

Keep Your Baby’s Head Warm With Caps

It’s very important to protect your baby’s exposed head from the cold winter wind as it can lead them to cry, and eventually, they can develop a high fever. So to prevent this risk, you need to ensure that your little one is wearing hoods whenever you are outside. You may try using caps that cover the ears and the head of your baby as well. Of course, you can knit one of these caps by yourself. But if you want to save time and effort, it’s better to shop for them online. There are several stores that offer baby winter gear for you. Personally, we would like to recommend you check out BabyOutlet. Their items come in variable style, design, great materials, and are very affordable. You will find all the apparels you need to cover your baby this winter from their winter collection.

Don’t forget Socks And Mittens

Your baby’s feet and hands can be easily exposed to the cold weather. So in order to protect them from falling sick, you need to also make sure that your infant is wearing socks and hand gloves, whether they are inside the house or not. This way, their tiny feet, and hands will stay warm and fuzzy. Moreover, adding socks before the baby wears shoes is also an excellent way of layering up. The hand mittens apart from being an essential baby winter wear are also beneficial for keeping them clean and safe from bacterias in the environment.

Knit and Woolen Are The perfect Materials

A vital tip to remember while dressing up a baby in winter is to pay attention to the material of the cloth used to make the baby winter wear. Cotton is ideal for summer, and woolen clothes are suitable for winter. Woolen clothes ensure your precious baby is warm, fuzzy, and safe throughout the cold season.

Swaddle Your Baby When They’re Going to Sleep

Swaddling or wrapping your newborn baby stimulates the womb environment, providing them the warmth and comfort that they’ve been accustomed to. Therefore, it is a good way to help your baby regulate temperature and go to sleep easier. Swaddling also helps babies to self-settle and stop the startle reflex.

It’s recommended that you use lightweight cotton or muslin wraps. Make sure the wrap doesn’t go above your baby’s shoulders or cover their head. If you wrap your baby too high or too thick, it can obstruct your baby’s breathing and cause overheating. Also, check if your baby has enough room to stretch their legs and the wrap is not too tight around their chest and hip.

How to Keep Your Toddler Warm During Winter Months

How to keep your toddler warm during winter months

One of the most common challenges to be parents is to keep your kids warm and cozy during the cold winter days. Toddlers are more vulnerable to cough and flu because it’s more difficult for toddlers to regulate their body temperature in winter. So, it’s important for parents to know what to do in order to help their baby maintain a consistent body temperature. Read on to know how to keep your toddler warm during winter months.

Dress Your Baby Right

The best way to keep your little princess warm in the winter season is dressing her in “easy to put on and remove” clothes. However, instead of overloading your kid with many heavy layers of outfits, you can simply use a jacket or a coat when she is outside. This also means you don’t have to remove too many clothes when your toddler is inside. Also, the trick here is to dress your child in one more layer than you. So, in case you might worry a toddler jacket is not enough, just let your toddler wear one more layer of tees or tops. If you are looking for stylish and cozy jackets or coats for your toddlers, we recommend you try, a reliable destination for toddler clothing.

Set the Room Temperature Right

To make sure your toddler doesn’t feel too cold or even too hot in winter, try keeping their room at a comfortable temperature (usually between 18-21°C). Also, we recommend using a room thermometer to check the correct temperature. Ideally, your toddler room temperature should feel cozy even for a lightly clothed adult.

Use a Sleeping Bag

In case the weather is too cold, dressing your kid in more clothes might be not enough to keep them warm. In order to help your toddler feel the most comfortable and enjoy a restful sleep on those freezing nights, a thick swaddling blanket or sleeping bag (also known as a wearable blanket) is required. Additionally, if your kid tends to kick the blankets off while sleeping, this method can help you with that.

Keep the Wind off your Toddle

The position of the bed in the room affects how comfortable your toddler will feel during their sleep. So, make sure your kid’s bed or crib is several feet away from air vents, fans, and outside walls. Plus, always fully close any windows and doors to prevent cold air from entering the room.

Cover Your Toddler’s Head, Hands, and Feet

The human body loses a lot of heat through the head and hands. So, it is really important to have a toddler knitted cap, mittens, and socks to give your toddler an extra layer of warmth. And, if your baby is a thumb sucker, baby and toddler mittens are the must-have item here.

Preheat the Bed before Sleeping

If you find out that the room is just too cold, then you should consider creating a warm and cozy sleeping space for your child by preheating the bed. To do that, you will need to place a hot water bottle or heating pad over the bed sheet at least 30 minutes before you put your little one to sleep. Most importantly, you need to check the bed temperature before laying your toddler down to avoid overheating or burns.

We hope these tips can help you to keep your toddler warm during the coming winter months. Also, if you have any questions or other tips, just let us know in the comments!

Why Breastfeeding is Best for Babies

Why Breastfeeding is Best for Babies

The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding until your baby is 6 months old, with continued breastfeeding and appropriate complementary foods up to the age of two or beyond. Not only is breastfeeding the best source of nutrition for your baby, but there are also advantages for you. Read on to know why you should choose to breastfeed your baby.

Why is Breast Milk so Special?

It’s a unique nutritional source that is easy to digest and provides the perfect balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, and nutrients to promote the growth and development of your baby.

In the first few days after giving birth, your body produces a special kind of breast milk known as colostrum. Thick and yellowish, colostrum is very nutritious and is rich in antibodies that help your baby fight off infections and bacteria. It also helps your baby’s digestive tract develop, helping it prepare to digest breast milk. After a few days, your breast milk comes through, which is runnier than colostrum, and whiter in color.

Breastfeeding not only provides your baby with tailored nutrition, but it’s available on-demand, day or night, and it’s free!

The health benefits go well beyond convenience and cost, however, and will have a far-reaching impact on both you and your baby long after your breastfeeding journey has ended.

Breastfeeding Benefits for Babies

  • Lower rates of SIDS in the first year of life (an effect that becomes even stronger when breastfeeding is exclusive).
  • Lower postneonatal infant mortality rates (a reduction of approximately 21% in the US).
  • Less risk of a baby developing eczema, asthma, and food allergies later in life.
  • Slightly enhanced performance on tests of cognitive development.
  • Lower incidence of infectious diseases, such as diarrhea, pneumonia, ear infections, respiratory tract illnesses.
  • Improved dental health with less risk of tooth decay.
  • Reduction of the risk of obesity later in life when you exclusively breastfeed for at least 4 months.
  • Lower rates of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, lymphoma, leukemia, and Hodgkin disease in older children and adults.
  • Breastfeeding also exposes your baby through the milk, you’re producing to the varying tastes and flavor profiles of the foods you eat, which can influence food acceptance and preferences when they begin to eat solids.

Health Benefits of Breastfeeding for Moms

  • A unique and powerful physical and emotional connection between you and your baby. Breastfeeding is the one parenting duty only a mom can do.
  • Non-verbal communication and bond with your baby that only grows to support an ever more intimate and effortless mutual exchange. Especially if you stay present while nursing with lots of touching, talking, singing, and eye contact.
  • Stimulation of your body to produce antibodies in your milk which in turn helps your baby stay well or recover faster when he’s sick.
  • Help with your return to your pre-pregnancy weight by increasing your energy requirements, promoting the mobilization of fat stores, and quickens your uterus to contract to its pre-pregnancy size.
  • Lower risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
  • Potentially lower risk of hip fractures and osteoporosis in the post-menopausal period.
  • Delays the return of your menstrual cycle, which will help maintain your iron status.

7 Surprising Facts You May Not Know about Infertility

facts about infertility

Never-ending costs, raging hormones, and disappointment, that is what almost every couple with infertility issues has to face with. Sadly, infertility affects between 80 to 100 million couples worldwide. Whether you’ve just started trying to conceive (TTC) or already had trouble with it, infertility is scary. The more you know about infertility, the better prepared you are to deal with it. So, here are 7 surprising facts you may not know about infertility.

Infertility is More Common than You Think

An estimated 1 in 8 couples (or 12% of married women) experience trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. While many couples believe they are alone, it is actually a very common issue. For couples experiencing infertility issues, there are many medical options available to assist and help deal with the emotional stress associated with not sustaining a pregnancy.

Infertility Does Not Only Affect Women

Although traditionally regarded as a female problem, malefactors affecting fertility are just as common. And, it’s often denied or neglected due to a variety of reasons. The reality, however, is that the female partner only accounts for these issues about one-third of cases. Infertility affects men and women equally, with the combination of both partners accounting for the remainder. Like all things in a relationship, getting pregnant is a joint effort. Also, the cause for difficulty trying to conceive can be attributed to either partner involved. There is never a need to place blame or feel guilt when such situations arise. Instead, it is best to work together to come up with a plan to overcome the obstacles in place. So, the goal of having a family can be accomplished.

The good news! Although sperm factors are often irreversible, it will be possible for most men to assist in conception via assisted reproductive technologies like IVF and ICSI!

Not Everyone Pursues Treatment

It can be difficult to accept that you have a problem. On top of that, the financial costs that come with it can be out of reach as they may not be covered by health insurance. It is a common reason for why only 44% of women with infertility have sought medical assistance. However, of those who seek medical intervention, and only around 65% give birth.

Sometimes, It Just Takes Time

After a couple of months of trying to conceive, it is easy for many couples to get discouraged if they are not seeing any results. This is especially true for young couples who feel that their level of health should make it a breeze. After years of using contraceptive methods, it can be easy to become discouraged if results are not immediate. Particularly living in a world where we’ve grown accustomed to instant gratification.

The fact is that only 60% of couples are able to conceive after 6 months of trying without any medical assistance at all. Well, human body is still a mystery! And, there is a wide array of factors that contribute to fertility. A lack of ideal conditions in the early stages of trying does not mean that a couple won’t be able to conceive naturally without assistance.

Being Over 35 Does Not Equate With Infertility

Age is probably the most common reason most people think about when it comes to infertility. On top of that, as women age, there is a tendency to believe that women over 35 have less of an ability to become pregnant. Well, it does influence your chances of getting pregnant as well as the success of most fertility treatment programs.

However, while aging is a natural cause of infertility, the chances of that will actually affect your fertility is not that significant. Between the ages 30-40, 70 to 90 percent of women still have the ability to conceive. This is an assuring fact for women who may have found the right time to start a family later in life, as medical assistance may not be necessary regardless of their age.

Reasons for Infertility Can Remain Undiagnosed

In most cases, known factors contributing to infertility are detected and diagnosed through a range of tests. However, in roughly 30% of cases, due to the unavailability of tests to certain parts of the reproductive process, the reasons for infertility still remain undiagnosed. Almost all couples can finally have their babies after treatments. But, in some cases, the costs, unavailability of specific treatments, and skilled professionals may prevent appropriate interventions.

Stress Can Interfere with Fertility!

Whether it’s emotional or physical, stress can interfere with normal ovulation because the brain controls the process of ovulation. And, it can switch the reproductive system off if circumstances are deemed to be unfavorable for healthy reproduction. So, don’t overthink and stress yourself out too much! There is always a solution to every problem.

10 Fun Ways To Encourage To Hand Washing

Hand Washing

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), proper handwashing is seen as a homemade vaccine, which is both simple and easy to implement. Just by washing your hands, several infectious diseases that have been occurring in the community will be prevented. Therefore, it is crucial for everyone to wash your hands frequently, including your baby. However, a lot of parents finds it struggling to guide their child to wash their hands. It may need more effort rather than a plain explanation to make them clean their hands. So if you are having this trouble, here are 10 fun ways to encourage your baby to do hand washing

1. Use Foaming Soap

Everyone loves playing with soap bubbles, including both children and adults. Your child will have so much fun when making all sorts of soap bubbles but still keep their hands clean at the same time. You may even find your baby constantly making excuses to wash their hands more!

There are several foaming soaps on the market that you can choose from. Even better, you can make foaming soap by yourself and you can include your baby in the work. Doing this will make your kids love to wash their hands more as they want to use their own products. Make sure that the soaps materials are suitable for your baby’s skin and keep an eye on any allergic reaction.

2. Sing A Song While Doing Hand Washing

It is ideal if your baby washes their hands for 30 seconds each time. Though it may be a short time it will be enough to kill the bacteria that are on your baby’s hand. Thirty seconds are enough for a short funny song. Therefore, you should guide your baby to wash their hands and sing a song that they love. The song can be from their favorite videos, cartoon, or any popular kid songs. Either the ‘Alphabet song’ or ‘This is the way we wash our hands’ if sung twice, take around 20 seconds. It’s lots more fun if parents sing along too! Ensure children thoroughly dry their hands using a clean towel after washing. Doing this will make handwashings much more enjoyable for your kids. In addition,  you should change the song constantly for each handwash to keep it interesting. If you and your baby love creativity, you can try to make your own family’s melody. You can try to add some gestures like hand-clapping or whistle into the melody so it will be more interactive and easier to remember.

3. Use Glitter To Teach Your Childs About Germs.

Young children are often resistant to washing their hands cause It is hard for them to understand things that they cannot see. So if you just tell them that their hands are full of bacteria and germs, they won’t listen to you. Therefore, using glitter is a concrete way to teach your kids about germs and the importance of washing hands. Start by sprinkling a bit of glitter onto your child’s hands. Explain that these glitter specks are like germs, which can make them sick. The germs are very small and they stick to you and get passed along. After that, have your child touch different surfaces and shake hands with other people. Doing this will show them how the germs (glitter) spread in their surrounding. Finally, let them wash their hands and see how the germs are washed away. Your child will much more able to get the concept of germs and bacteria. As a result, they will do handwashing regularly to keep themselves healthy.

4. Bubbles Game

Children love creating different shapes and soap bubbles will grant them unlimited possibilities. You can teach your baby to blow soap bubbles through their fingers by forming their soapy hands into a circle. Shortly you won’t be surprised to find them spend like half an hour at the sink each time.

5. Establish A Daily Routine

Establishing a daily routine that including handwashing is very important. Try to guide your baby to wash their hands every day before and after eating, after playing outside, or before sleeping. By doing this regularly in a period of time, your child will get used to it right away and you don’t need to spend a lot of effort to make your baby wash their hands.

6. Use Your Baby’s Favorite Baby Soaps for Hand Washing

Unlike adults, so do children who love colorful things and soap. A fancy cake of soap can be an attractive addition to children’s handwashing activities. Try funny fruit-smelling soaps or ones that feature their favorite characters

7. Make Boring Hand Washing More Lively

Your baby will learn to do things by mimic your actions. Handwashings is no exception. So make sure that you wash your hands regularly. However, to keep it interesting, you can make different noises for each handwashing step or perform a hilarious dance after the end. A guide for a Diet after having C-section

After you give birth to your baby, your body’s nutritional needs will raise rapidly to help you recover and increase the quality of your breast milk. However, if you had a C-section, these needs are even at a higher level. Unlike normal births, mothers who give birth by a cesarean section will have to suffer much bigger pain caused by abdominal wounds. Therefore you will a more nutritious and reasonable diet to help you heal better. Here is our guide about your diet after C- section.

What should you eat right after having C-section

Within the first 6-8 hours after birth, you will normally not allowed to eat anything as there is still a quite amount of gas that trapped inside your body. This condition happened due to your intestines and stomach are affected during the section, making bowel movements decrease. Thereby, the gas produced in your body can not exist. If you are too hungry, you can eat a small amount of vegetarian soup or fruit juice. After your intestines and stomach work again you can start eating other normal foods.

A healthy diet to restore your health

If you used to have good eating habits while you were pregnant, keeping these habits is still a great ideal. However, you should improve the number of foods that are high in protein, vitamin C, and iron in your diet. These nutrients are very important to help you restore your health after the C section.

Protein is the key to the healing process and is needed for the growth of new tissue. It is also the main source of energy for your body to work and heal. Foods rich in protein are meats, fish, chicken, eggs, dairy foods, nuts, dried beans, and peas.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C plays an important role in healing and fighting infection. Green vegetables and ripe fruits contain a lot of vitamin C that can boost your immune system to prevent different kinds of illnesses. In addition, you may face constipation as your bowel movements may not fully functional yet. Therefore vitamin C and fiber in greens vegetable or fruits will help you prevent constipation and even hemorrhoids. Foods that normally high in vitamin C are oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, melons, and papayas.

Iron helps the immune system and is needed for hemoglobin. In addition, iron also essential to stimulate blood production and wounds healing. Obviously, you will lose a big amount of blood during the surgery. So, supply more iron will help you feel less pain and heal faster. Red meats, liver, dried beans, dried fruits, and iron-enriched cereals are good sources for iron.

Prenatal vitamin and supplements after C section

As your digest system may still weak after the C section, you may have to absorb the nutrients by other supplements. Your doctor may want you to keep taking your prenatal vitamins and iron pills for the first 6 weeks after the C section. Remember to take 1 iron pill a day as taking more may upset your stomach.  It takes about 6 months for your body to restore its supply of iron. Therefore combining foods and supplements will help your body get the amount of iron it needs to heal. If you are bottle-feeding your newborn, you can take an over-the-counter vitamin with iron for 6 months. If you are breastfeeding, it is normally recommended that you take prenatal vitamins for as long as you breast-feed.

Drink plenty of Fluids after C Section

It is important to drink plenty of fluids after you give birth in general and especially after a C section. Drinking enough fluids every day will help you stay hydrated and prevent constipation. Drink 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of fluids each day. It does not have to be water. You can drink low-fat milk, non-sweetened fruit juices, or eat low-fat yogurt. It is recommended that you add 200 – 500 extra calories to your diet as well. Extra calories and fluids are needed for making high-quality milk. You can add the extra calories by drinking extra fruit juices and low-fat milk. Also, you should try to include foods rich in Vitamin A such as greens, cantaloupes, carrots, and sweet potatoes.

There you go, now you have our guide about your diet after C- section. In addition to having a good diet, you should take time to relax and do exercises to help your body heal faster. Do you have any recipes that are great for a postpartum mother? Share with us in the comments!
